Hokusai: Beyond the Great Wave

A couple of weeks ago we went to the British Museum to have a look at their amazing Hokusai exhibition, and watch the movie "Miss Hokusai":

It was an experience that involved FAR larger crowds than anticipated (thanks to new security measures getting in on weekends now involve a lot of waiting), quite a bit of running, and getting out of the movie with less than an hour to spare before closing. As we've invested in a British Museum membership each, we didn't have to pay for the exhibition, and decided to go in, have a relatively quick look around, and then return early in the morning at some point. (In the meantime we bought the exhibit DVD and watched it in preparation, learning an incredible amount of new things about Hokusai in particular and the ukiyo-e artworld in general.)

We made it back this Saturday, when we had registered for a lecture on woodblock printing in the 21st century at 1.30pm, leaving us plenty of time to enjoy the exhibition and the rest of the museum. We woke up before 7am to make sure we'd make it down to London shortly after the museum opened, and when we got there it was gloriously free of crowds. We made a beeline for the exhibition which had pre-opened for members only, and spent a good two hours just... taking it all in.

It's a fantastic exhibition. The British Museum made this little video introduction, which I quite like:

And there was so much to see! I'll divide it into two parts: Hokusai prints (courtesy of the British Museum), and my photos from the trip.

And from the sublime to just my Galaxy 7S snapshots...

One Piece celebrates its 20th anniversary today. Two decades of the same story. Twenty years of writing and drawing a chapter a week very nearly all the year around.

Can you imagine? And it's still so good. It still makes me cry on the regular.

I've been following along for more than half the series' life - since 2004. I've shared lovely hours bonding with friends over One Piece and creating inspired by One Piece. And I met my wife through a LiveJournal post on One Piece.

I wish I were in Japan to celebrate, but alas.

At least I've already had I've of my wishes come true! I've gotten to tell Odacchi 'thank you for everything' along with hundreds of other fans. So until next time... HAPPY BIRTHDAY ONE PIECE!!

There are slight sound effects here, but I don't think they should be triggering for listeners with auditory epilepsy, and there is no dramatic reverb/echo for those with auditory processing issues. The biggest difference is in "distance" and a slight volume drop.

Things we've been watching

We just finished March Comes in Like A Lion season 1 and I am so glad there's a second season coming because this show has shot to the top of my All Time Favorite list. (Which is hard to do! It's a crowded list!) It's so sweet and warm and genuine. It's a slice of life show about people who have suffered and been messed up and are dealing (or not dealing) in various ways and although there's a lot of heavy themes it has such amazing heart. Love it.

Skuld's been watching Master of None and I watch along. It's definitely hit or miss with me. The first season was fun, it has absolutely shining moments. The Thanksgiving episode with Denise coming out was powerful stuff, but the whole will they/won't they straight romance with a side of cheating is boring and hits Bad Buttons so I'm not too impressed with the second season overall.

Tour de Pharmacy (in UK: Pharmacy Road) a silly Adam Samberg HBO special docudrama thing that takes the piss out of cycling in general and the Tour the France in particular was funny. And exceedingly ridiculous. But also funny - and Daveed Diggs had a big part in it so extra love for that!

Twin Peaks: The Return continues to be a tour the force for Lynch & Frost. It's beautiful and unsettling and does things its own way for its own reasons and I adore it for that. We usually watch each episode twice, and in the hiatus after episode 8 we rewatched 1-7 again, so that's three viewings so far and I still don't get bored of it. (Frustrated, yes. Bored? No.)

And since we were on a Twin Peaks kick we finally got around to watching Mulholland Drive and. Yes. That is certainly... a film? I'm not sure what I watched, or why, but it's been a lot of fun discussing it with Skuld and reading/listening to analyses and theories. I'd actually like to rewatch it? Because while I didn't love it, I did find it a really interesting experience.

HOT FUZZ. Because we ran out of other things we were in the mood to watch and we both love this movie to bits. We put it on a random Tuesday night and were late to bed because Hot Fuzz. For all the reasons. Including, of course, the thing Edgar Wright summed up in his famous 2009 tweet:

@edgarwright Me and @simonpegg once wrote some Nicholas Angel and Danny Butterman slash fiction. It was called HOT FUZZ…(applause)

More from Twitter, with fanart )

Things I've read
The Girl with Ghost Eyes (Xian Li-lin, #1)The Girl with Ghost Eyes by M.H. Boroson

Oh no! I really, really wanted to love this. And it had a bunch of ingredients I like. But... they never really came together for me. I think it's a me thing rather than a book thing, and I don't feel I can write a proper review. I mean: the books does have a lot of fascinating themes, Li-lin is an interesting character, and the world is quite vividly drawn. I don't know why it still fell flat for me.

What's next?
I've got new volumes of Vinland Saga and Princess Jellyfish manga to read, and I've got the latest Raksura and Queen's Thief books all queued up on my reader. I just need to find something that drags me back into reading, because with all the Real Life excitement recently my attention span has grown short and my anxiety looms large and it's making it hard for me to focus on words and other worlds...

Notes: This is written for the 2017 D/G Forum Exchange on FF.net, but Real Life conspired so that I wasn't actually part of the exchange. So I just grabbed a prompt to write, because it's been aaaaaaaaaaaaages since I've written these two together.
Prompt: Ginny has been put under a curse of some kind. Draco is the only one who can break it. Feel free to go a little off-canon with the magic here, because the curse should be enduring in some kind of way. In other words, something bigger and harder to break than a Leg-Locker Curse, for example. More on the lighthearted side rather than something dark, but there can be serious moments as well.
Summary: Ginny thought she was good enough to avoid curses while working as an archaeologist. When cursed, she needed the help of the best curse breaker to get her sight back. Her brother was too upset to do it, so his assistant Draco Malfoy had to step up to do the job.

There's so much to do for an international move. We've started looking at pet transport, moving quotes, new furniture... It gets pretty overwhelming when taken all at once. But it should be manageable. We can do it, little by little.

It'll get easier when (when, not "if", because I have to let myself hope) can confirm that we can get one of the apartments were're eyeing. They're new builds, which is why we have a shot without spending the usual 2-3 years on housing waiting lists before getting anything but a short-term sublet.

Apartment blathering )

So many things we want to start planning, and so many hopes pinned on this block of flats... and we just don't know if we'll get one. We literally don't know what is required to start a tenancy application. I emailed the landlord/builder rep, and of course they're on vacation now, because that's how Sweden rolls. So there's nobody in the office until the week before I go to the showing.

I keep having anxious moments when I'm sure they will be ALL OUT OF APARTMENTS and we'll be stuck chasing short-term second hand leases where we won't be allowed to bring our cats and it would be a total nightmare. I don't think that's true - they would hardly invite people for a showing if they didn't have any flats left to let - but what if. Agh. *fret fret fret fret*

There are just too many factors in this I can't control, and until those are settled my anxiety/stress levels will be unusually high and that's just. My life now. But fingers crossed?!

Another completely unrelated thing I can't control is the fact that Instagram's embeds don't work here. :/ I've logged a support request, but of course that's somewhere around priority #4987 for the Dreamwidth staff.

See, this is what shows up when I use Instagram's Embed:

Cut for waste of space )

But I've been wanting to share some of the pics I've been posting, and I won't let a giant technical issue I can't solve stop that. I... uh. I've been screencapping my Instagram posts and uploading them to DW...? It's the silliest workaround ever, but it gives me something to do that isn't obsess about how hard life will be if we can't get one of those apartments!

Baby Driver

I always love Edgar Wright's directing - Hot Fuzz is one of my all-time favorite movies - so now that he's got a new movie out I didn't even watch a trailer before buying tickets.

Baby Driver is a fun movie, with absolutely amazing directing. And not just "directing" in the sense of telling the actors what to do, but - the opening credits list a choreographer. Pretty much all the music is diegetic - it's heard and experienced in-universe. The same is true for the sound design.

It's such a joyful experience to watch a beautifully crafted scene where everything is integrated to the point of fight scenes where the guns go off in time with the background soundtrack, and the editing is as beautiful as anything in a high quality fanvid.

Here are the first six minutes of the film so you can see what I'm talking about:

Oh and one thing I really loved was seeing the main character speak a lot of sign language with his foster dad, who was a very sweet and sympathetic figure, and the ASL was just there no big deal. Very nicely done, and an unexpected and much-needed bit of representation. (The actor who plays the foster dad is Deaf, too.)

That said... It was not without issues, and I'm not as head over heels for it as a lot of other people.

WELCOME TO PODFIC BROKEN TELEPHONE

What’s that, you ask?

Here’s how it works: Person A (your friendly neighbourhood mod) makes a podfic. It becomes the prompt for Person B. Person B’s podfic becomes a prompt for Person C’s podfic. And down the line we go until everyone’s had a turn.

Using a podfic as a prompt means that each podiccer will pick at least one key element from their prompt podfic and use it in their work. A key element could be, but isn’t limited to: fandom, character, ship, trope, format (dialogue-only, epistolary, etc) or podficcing style (SFX, music, accents, etc). Think of “key element” as something about the podfic that you’d talk about in a rec.

Musings on mum

Here I am again, almost five months later. Mum died on February 19th, she took her last breath at the hospital, with me and my sister by her side. Life became so much emptier when she left us. She never did regain consciousness after those last words to me in the living-room on the 18th of February - "Det blir bättre" - "det blir bättre".. it's mum in a nutshell, but how can it get better? Time pass, and now it's not everyday that I start crying because I see or hear or find something that reminds me of her, it's not even every week, but then something happens, and the loss is there. The realization that I will never speak with mum again, that she won't answer, even if I will continue to talk to her..

I logged on to livejournal for the first time since mum died and went back and read old posts. So very few were tagged "mum" even if she was mentioned in many more. Dad's illness came and took over, he was, and is, always the one that got the most attention. But mum was always there, and she was our steady rock, the one that fixed everything, that made life bearable, that made the house beautiful, the one who got all my literary talk, who finished my sentences, and who had the best laugh ever. How on earth will we be able to celebrate Christmas this year? she was so ill last year, and she didn't really manage to do her usual stuff, but she was THERE, she sat in the sofa, and we got our hugs.. it was terrible to have Easter and Midsummer without her. Mum's and dad's wedding day passed and we could only be happy that they got to celebrate their 40th anniversary last year. All these special days that now will have to be remembered in another way..

In some ways it's been extra good that we still have dad to take care of.  We haven't been able to wallow in sadness, which at least I probably would have done otherwise. Dad misses mum a lot, but I think he was more prepared than we were, since mum apparently talked to him several years ago. In hindsight I can see that some of his anxiety over where mum were probably came from this. But sometimes I think he forgets that she's gone. And it feels terrible to have to tell him she isn't here.

I haven't been able to write about mum's death until now, and it still feels inadequate and quite strange to make this post. But I think I need to try to write about it a bit more. Mum, and life after mum. The strange sensation I had in the weeks just after her death of someone touching my feet to wake me up in the middle of the night, and then waking up and hearing dad crying. Mum continues to look out for him, and her love is around inside us. Finding old postcards with her handwriting. Bickering with my sister over what to save and what to throw away. Not being able to make those decisions so instead putting quite a lot of mum's stuff in boxes in the attic instead. Crying tonight when we watched Father Brown and they sang Christmas carols, since I realized I'd never visit St Andrew's Anglican church with mum for their carol singing at Christmas again..

So many small things that just won't happen again.

In mum's obituary we quoted one of her favourite poems by Emily Brontë, it's mum for me in so may ways:

No coward soul is mine
No trembler in the world´s storm-troubled sphere
I see Heaven´s glories shine
And Faith shines equal arming me from Fear
