naye: yunlan drawing his hand away from shen wei (guardian - almost touching)
[personal profile] naye
So there's this ficlet (fic?) I've been battling with this week. It's not the Guardian Exchange fic, which means that I can share a bit. It's been lovely to see words happen, cheered on by [personal profile] xparrot, even as I've had absolutely no idea where any of it was going.

And I still don't know where we'll end up. These two I swear...

But Shen Wei had rolled his sleeves up and unfastened the first three buttons of his dress shirt, and after days of seeing nothing but his professor’s suits and Envoy robes, that was taking Zhao Yunlan’s mind other places than talking. He found his gaze lingering at the hollow of Shen Wei’s throat, and had to remind himself sternly that he had more important things to do than getting his tongue on that skin.

And Shen Wei had already noticed, of course. Zhao Yunlan looked up to catch him ducking his head over the tomato and eggdrop soup—but not without flicking his gaze over Zhao Yunlan’s lips first. Well. That might be just the opening Zhao Yunlan had been waiting for.

It's been a while since I expressed my deep and sincere gratitude (and surprise!) that I once again have the pleasure of experiencing a fandom where Dreamwidth is a main node. Having comms and journals for discussion is infinitely better than trying to do the same through Tumblr's reblog-to-answer system.

I was just reminded of this when I saw a person whose (innocuous) post I and others had reblogged with random comments go don't have this discussion on my blog!, which. I feel you, person! But that's not how Tumblr works! Once you post something it is gone. People can respond to it and interact with it in ways you may find doesn't match your original intent because Tumblr is a platform where you pass things around.

And because I have a Dreamwidth I can share this and people can read it and then if anyone wants to have a discussion about Tumblr there are comments! That I can moderate, even! I won't have the frustration of it wandering off to some far corner and turn into a discussion on... IDK, "We should all move back to LiveJournal" or something else that would annoy me to be looped in on through notifications.

So grateful to Dreamwidth for still being here, and for everyone who's stuck with it and come back and just taken it up for making this my internet home. ♥

Waking up in Kyoto with [personal profile] doctorskuld at my side and [personal profile] xparrot and [personal profile] gnine right there is an amazing thing, and I feel I need to do it more often.

I wouldn't have believed it possible, but the day actually just got better from there, with a visit to Katsura Villa, a return to Mibudera, surprise!storytime, chicken nanban, shopping streets and a night at Nijo Castle.

Bordered table?

ETA: With amazing speed and helpfulness, [personal profile] qikiqtarjuaq  posted posted a fix in the comments that works for me! Thank you so much!

I've been tearing my hair out trying to get a bordered table. I can change the HTML all I want - I see it in the Rich Text editor, and then it disappears in my posts only to show up again in my comment notification emails.

I'm pretty sure it's due to Dreamwidth's CSS overriding the HTML, especially as the border attribute is something that's supposed to be in the CSS. The suggestion in the linked FAQ is to include CSS in your post (which I didn't know you could do!), but even copy-pasting from W3 Schools doesn't solve it for me.

I was wondering 1) if anyone has actually managed to make their table borders visible and 2) if my table borders are visible for anyone who uses a different default skin? I use the standard "Tropospherical Red".

Here's a tiny bordered table for you:

Sunday Six: Guardian ficlet snippet

naye: (guardian - weilan)
[personal profile] naye
I wrote an actual ficlet over the weekend! It's been ages since I did proper writing - the trip really did a number on my word brain, as did jetlag, and I was getting worried about it. But [personal profile] tanndell came to the rescue with some prompts, and words finally happened! ♥

Since this is getting posted soon, and my next WIP will probably be the Guardian Reverse Exchange assignment (EEEEE!!!) which is secret... Taking the chance to actually post one of these. I love seeing what everyone's working on - well. I'll see what everyone's working on tomorrow, as it's past bedtime now. (This is what happens when [personal profile] skuldchan is away. How am I so bad at timekeeping when I'm on my own??)

"It was before Wang Zheng!" Yunlan says. "I filed the old SID stuff with the older SID stuff and--how is that not a good system?"

Shen Wei gives Yunlan a disappointed look, but all he says is, "Lin Jing, can we now app your scan to the fax?"

Lin Jing keeps a very straight face as he says, "Mm-hmm. Yes."

Inspired by [personal profile] heipaoshi and [personal profile] asya_ana keeping organised spreadsheets with Guardian resources I've been going through my magpie's news of bookmarks, follows, and collected images and attempted to collate them all into a single resource.

I'm far from done yet, but as nobody wants a hundred artists flung at them all at once I figured I could start sharing them in batches of ten? That way people might have a chance to explore artist portfolios, and follow/like/reblog the art wherever possible. ♥

Quick reminder here: please don't repost the work of these fanartists without permission. Reblogging and retweeting is great and appreciated! Reposting is when, instead of boosting the artist's post, someone downloads the art and then uploads it to their own public social media (with or without credit). Read more on reposting and how it hurts artists here.

On Twitter, please be aware that a lot of artists find quote retweets to be almost as bad as reposting. Also, some things to keep in mind when interacting with non-English fanartists here.

Leaving Shirahama on a train a little after 8 am it was so cold I couldn't believe I'd gone swimming the previous evening. And yet, even shivering on a train platform is pretty awesome when you're surrounded by some of your favorite people in the world, and you're in Japan.

We'd specifically picked a direct train all the way up to Kyoto, and passed all those hills with mandarin orange orchards and wind turbines before we were back in familiar territory. Familiar and strange...

When the train crossed the Katsura river - an unmistakable landmark, and western border to my Kyoto - it was like passing through a soap bubble. Crossing an invisible barrier - feeling a shiver of something.

A shiver of the past, of the bubble that was my exchange year in 2005-6, and of the years after I returned, where Kyoto always felt more like home than anywhere else I lived.

But I hadn't been back since 2011. On our 2014 honeymoon we only went to Tokyo, so Kyoto had been... far away for a very long time. (Kyoto is the city in my icon.) And then it wasn't, all of a sudden! All of those memories, of the experiences that changed my life in such profound ways - I was in the same place where all that happened, with some of the same people, only. Now.

Strange.

Strange and wonderful.
