I realized today that I haven't checked my f-list for what, a week? How does that happen? Okay, so I was away for the weekend, and then Doctor Who seriously distracted me, but still, huh?
That which stayed unnoticed (among other things):
The Meet the Hewletts and Meet LJ friends event reactions.
tacit_uk posted her wonderful take on our fannish days here. Plus, there are puppy and kitten pictures!
naye's report on the Hewletts event is very detailed (She took notes!) and just as awesome.
That which has taken too long:
Finally, I posted the sign-up entry for the Season Five Tagathon are open over at
sga_episodefic. I'll participate too, it's only fair. *g* Writing a tag for every episode this season is going to be a real challenge. I never signed up for anything before -- I'm curious how I'm going to do fannish work under pressure. I really can't tell.
That which I always neglected:
Vidding. I'd forgotten how much I love it. We watched so many really good fanvids during our fannish long weekend. I never thought I was particularly good at vidding until
naye got positively excited about this SG1 vid I made a while ago. Without knowing it was actually mine. I blushed. Seriously, very deeply. Because I know that she has very good taste. It made me rethink my decision to give up vidding, and boosted my motivation, even though my #&@%ing computer drives me totally crazy with its slowness and trashing of files. The result was a Doctor Who vid, and two days of serious fun.
I never really advertised that SG1 vid from a while ago. I had to correct that:
Title: Fiction
Music: Nik Kershaw
Fandom: SG-1
Notes: The truth is stranger than fiction. This vid was inspired by 'Citizen Joe' and 'Wormhole X-treme'.

ETA: Oh my god, I've been nominated! Look:

Isn't this unbelievably awesome? Well, it is to me, anyway!

Date: 2008-07-09 06:15 pm (UTC)I just need to know - what's the title of the episode it's mainly focused on? You know the one I mean! I could always look it up, but I don't even remember which season it's from. (6? 7?)
Your vids are AWESOME. \o/

Date: 2008-07-09 07:41 pm (UTC)I know I babbled on about it when I saw it the first time, but I really do have to say some of this again...
I LOVE the intro! I love how you've managed to take a collection of pretty - hm. Average? clips, and made them fit the music SO well, and really - it draws you in, draws you to the characters, even though there aren't any explosions or hugs or anything really extreme like that. (My favorite bit is how Teal'c's blowtorch goes out as the drumroll fades in. Or maybe how you introduce the characters - and the gate! - one by one, and then have them all together. Mmm.)
The same is true of the interludes - you make them interesting, and more than filler.
And I utterly adore the story of the vid - but you knew that already! The "If they made a film of the book of the memory" - eee~! It's so, so perfect, because you've got Joe with his book, watching the film that - uh. Whatshisname. Him made based on the vague memories he had of everything he knew about the Stargate.
I find it so cool that the vid comments that - comments Joe's journey and experiences, and then it goes into things like "If someone had told you you'd be where you are today You'd of thought they were crazy and laughed in their face" and it's SO TRUE when you look at Daniel who started out as the geek and turned into a soldier, and Jack who started out as a stubborn soldier going against the man, and turned into - well. The man!
Also! It makes me GRIN when "the truth is stranger than fiction" and it's BETTER than fiction, because you have Wormhole-Sam, and then real Sam, and she is radiant and smart and so much better than any fantasy you could put on a TV screen. ♥
Oh, I have such MASSIVE love for this! Thank you so much for sharing it!!

Date: 2008-07-09 07:33 pm (UTC)I cannot stress enough how much I adore this video. I think it's clever and narratively sound the way you utilized Citizen Joe, a (relatively?) not fan-favorite episode, a flashback episode to boot in a way that created this whole story of how the realities of gateverse are incredibly strange, wacky (WACKO!), but it's their lives and our team deals with it and they soldier on. I love the editing and the array of clips you used, from Teal'c laughing and his eyebrow raising, to Jack and Daniel's buddy-buddy relationship to Sam being just all around awesome at whatever she does. Hammond, the gate--Beneath the Surface, I am loving it all and reccing this to high heaven.

Date: 2008-07-09 08:04 pm (UTC)I'm so happy it worked for you here. And now I'm blushing. Really. Because I was always insanely proud of this vid, but didn't really think it could, um, compete with fandom standards? (Yes, I know!) It took a swift kick from
About 'Citizen Joe': I hated it, too, when I watched it for the first time -- simply because of the fact that it was a money-saving flashback episode. But it's actually really good. Just the fact that Joe shows emotion where Jack doesn't makes it worth watching. It sheds light on Jack's character when he isn't even really there.

Date: 2008-07-09 08:27 pm (UTC)I was out of fannish step when Citizen Joe aired. I loved it from the first time I saw it. They actually made the flashback episode interesting to me. And the first time I saw Wormhole X-Treme I thought it was a riot because I adore Martin, too.
I'm always a fan of people who are able to take the one-off characters from shows and bring them forward or give them some sort of role in fic and fanvids and this is no exception here-- Joe is just as much part of our team as our team is. We as fans are Joe, experiencing all the bizarreness that's gone on in the last 8 years.
I love the way that Wormhole X-Treme is so naturally introduced in the song. This really is a case where the lyrics totally help you make the story here - I adore that.
I love "urgo" on the clip of "Stranger" and I love Daniel opening up the closet doors to the wormhole and I love especially the part in the beginning with the blowtorch and the motion sensors.
Things I also love: transition of gates at 1:52 to 1:53 from the real to the "fake"
the shots of Joe's family at 2:17 about them not understanding Joe
shot of Jack from Zero Hour in the elevator at 2:20,
beneath the surface jack and lost city jack at 2:38
the section about Daniel is OMG FANTASTIC: "someone had told you, you'd be ought to be" -- with all those shots of Daniel, because omg DANIEL, you never expected that your wildest crazy "pyramids as landing pads for alien ships" theories would actually be proven true and that you'd travel the world
All the shots of the team with the guns at 3:30!
it's just.. I LOVE LOVE LOVE it. Don't think that there's some kind of fandom standard and have that keep you from vidding anymore. I'm glad your friend kicked you in the butt because this means I can go OMG YAY all over your journal and rec it because I think Stargate should continue to have a thriving vidding community even though canon's pretty much closed at this point. There are so many stories to tell and oh - you make that case quite clear.

Date: 2008-07-11 07:58 pm (UTC)Yep, me too. And the commentaries. Have you watched it with commentaries? It made me all *rofl* because there's so much background information and fun stuff you don't get otherwise.
We as fans are Joe, experiencing all the bizarreness that's gone on in the last 8 years.
Yes! I loved that! Introducing general fan opinion on certain episodes into the actual show was ingeniously well done here. Like when Joe's wife and colleagues criticize his plots, or when the actress on Wormhole X-treme asks why she doesn't fall through the floor when she can walk through walls.
You name so many specific things you like! ♥ Thank you so much! You are aware that you've outed yourself as a total geek by identifying the episode for every single shot, aren't you? *g* I'm always happy to meet fellow geeks. \o/

Date: 2008-07-09 08:27 pm (UTC)I STILL owe you email! I haven't felt awake enough to beta, and since vid-betas aren't my strong point anyway it'll need some concentration. Which I am looking forward to having at my disposal sooooon! But I'm a brain-dead idiot this week. We're trying out a new sleeping arrangement tonight - Dex in the kitchen as normal, and me in the dining room, because he barks and barks whenever I go anywhere else, and it's been keeping my elderly next-door neighbours awake. And they're deaf. Wish me sleep...

Date: 2008-07-09 08:55 pm (UTC)I have learnt my lesson - next time I want to post something that's got a lot of photos, links, LJ names and other things that Rich Text is supposed to make easy? I am coding it by hand.
Erm, but this is all beside the point. DC, did I mention lately that I love this vid?!

Date: 2008-07-09 09:42 pm (UTC)Not here :D Thank you!
Btw, I always code by hand. That way you can at least entertain the illusion that you know exactly what LJ is doing.

Date: 2008-07-09 09:38 pm (UTC)Can't, I'm laughing too hard.
You should stab LJ-- wait, you did! Good!
The vid beta might actually be a moot point if my computer trashed the file for good this time. I haven't dared to check yet. I'm hoping for the best! And take your time. I'm in no hurry.
Sleep! For you. Your neighbors too.

Date: 2008-07-11 07:39 pm (UTC)I've had this vid (and my first one) up on imeem, where it's been sitting quietly for a while. I've got a link on my LJ sidebar, but that is as far as my advertising went. I was/am proud of 'Fiction' and I loved making it, but I *really didn't think it was all that good* compared to others. And that's not modesty talking here. Bless
Oh, and did she happen to mention we watched yours, too? ♥ (Note to self: Must remember to find link and comment properly.)

Date: 2008-07-11 07:46 pm (UTC)Yes, the song. I love it (all of Nik Kershaw's music, in fact), and it fit 'Citizen Joe' so well. And team! I miss the old SG-1. Terribly so. The vid induces kind of nostalgic feelings, now that SG is finally over...

Date: 2008-10-31 06:31 am (UTC)I just watched (& totally loved!) your SGA vid, "Alone." I really wanted to check out this one, too, but it seems that the download is no longer up. Would you mind putting it up again, if that's not too inconvenient? Thank you so much! What I've seen of your work so far is lovely and I can't wait to see more!
